Understanding RTLS: A Guide to Real-Time Location Systems
What Is RTLS?
A Real-Time Location System (RTLS) is a technology stack that automatically identifies and tracks the location of objects or people in real time, typically within a defined indoor environment. Unlike GPS, which is designed for outdoor use, RTLS leverages shorter-range wireless technologies such as BLE, UWB, Wi-Fi, or RFID.
Technology Comparison
Each RTLS technology trades off between accuracy, cost, and deployment complexity:
- BLE: 1–3 metre accuracy, low cost, long battery life — ideal for asset tracking and proximity.
- UWB: Sub-30cm accuracy, moderate cost — ideal for high-precision manufacturing floor tracking.
- Wi-Fi RTLS: 3–10 metre accuracy, leverages existing AP infrastructure — ideal for large campuses.
